Casey Stoner clinched his first MotoGP pole position since the season opener in Qatar at the inaugural Aragon Grand Prix.
The Australian returned the quickest time of the weekend so far on his penultimate lap as he crossed in a time of one minute 48.942seconds.
Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo did enough to ensure he will start a 15th successive race on the front row as he recorded the second best time on his Fiat Yamaha, 0.309secs behind Stoner.
Dani Pedrosa clocked the third fastest time of the session although he may have had more but for a mistake on his final lap.
The Repsol Honda rider went through the final split 0.215secs ahead of Stoner's mark but he ran wide late on to miss his chance.
Stoner's Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden heads the second row just ahead of fellow American Ben Spies, who impressed to pin down fifth position.
Randy de Puniet rounded out the second row on his LCR Honda.
Reigning champion Valentino Rossi had to be content with seventh position after he lapped 1.075secs behind Stoner.
